OVER IT – LIFE BEHIND THE BUWSH

“I’m Over it”

1. The expression of a loss of interest.

2. The indication that a negative event is no longer bothersome.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

Genesis 3:7-11 (NKJV)

The Bible begins with two human beings

who live a life without shame and fear

• They were God-conscious, not self-conscious.

• Adam was Eve-conscious and Garden-conscious, but never Adam-conscious.

• Self-consciousness can become an obsession that cuts us off from God and others.

Enter the tempter

• He questions God’s commands: did God specifically say that?

• He denies the penalty for disobedience: you will not surely die.

• He offers to give her what she already has: your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God.

• He makes it all sound educational: you will gain the knowledge of good and evil.

three legs to the shame train

1. Deception to Temptation

2. Temptation to Disobedience

3. Disobedience to Shame and Fear

God came to the Garden to call them out of their fear and to cover their shame.
